Educational Institution Partnerships
Helping others learn is one of my passions, so working with education institutions is a real joy for me. I love designing books for children and adults, and creating promotional materials such as brochures, viewbooks, and posters.

Macmillan-McGraw Hill

Jenny Nichols, Creative Director for the Science Division, asked me to bid on 7 children’s books. After an initial start-up meeting in New York City, I worked effectively, over the Internet, with many departments at MMH. It was fun and challenging as an outside vendor, handling the entire project from design direction, budgeting, photo research and stock house permissions, hiring illustrators, through production. The job was delivered on time and on budget. For the book, Microwaves and Cooking, I worked with Raytheon to gather hard-to-find images. MMH sent them printed copies of the book and they were so impressed that they ordered more to distribute at the microwaves exhibition at their company headquarters.

Pearson Education, Inc.

Karen Pekarne, a colleague of mine in New York, recommended me to Yin Wong when she needed good designers for a fast-paced children’s book project. I was delighted to work on such an interesting project because of my love of children’s book publishing. The challenges were that the schedule demanded creating and producing 18 books with overlapping schedules and fixed deadlines, produced in a publishing program, Indesign, that all of the designers were required to use. The good news was the win-win attitude of the staff, their positive attitude under extreme pressure, and the books themselves. Hiring two designers in Asheville to collaborate with me on the project, I worked entirely over the Internet, doing photo research with a company in Chicago, using Pearson’s FTP site and Acrobat PDFs to present and modify the designs. I was the only designer located outside of New York and found that Yin and her staff were incredibly supportive of the process and a delight to work with. The result: the client was thrilled with the professionalism and creativity of all the designers.

Biltmore Estate Activity Books for Children
I was hired by Biltmore Estate to develop two children's activity books for ages 3 to 8. I put together a team of professionals that I had worked with before in New York City. Elspeth Leacock is a talented historical and educational writer; Rodica Prato a fabulous illustrator.
Together we collaborated on a product that went beyond what our clients had envisioned. We did historical research, site tours, and activity development, creating a high-quality product that reflects the grandeur and wonder of the Estate in a way that will appeal to modern children and their parents.

Metropolitan Teaching and Learning Corporation
Metro Teaching and Learning Company is a publisher located in Manhattan that specializes in multicultural educational books, particularly custom publishing for cities like Detroit and Chicago. I was hired, first to create a series of guided math readers, and then as design manager to oversee a social studies project for the city of Detroit and a math project for Chicago. I worked with illustrators, writers, editors, and photo researchers in a collaborative environment that was professional, fast-paced, and yet fun, where I was part of a group of dedicated creative people that I truly loved.

Newbridge Publishers
As part of my job at Metro, we were hired to create a series of fourth to sixth-grade books on Science, Social Studies and History for Newbridge Publishing. I was involved in the creative process from developing appropriate subject matter, editorial content, research, as well as design.

Adelphi University
I worked with Jessica Weber on a series of projects for Adelphi University in New York. I designed and produced viewbooks, brochures and other materials for prospective students.

Richmond Hill Inn
Mark File, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Richmond Hill Inn hired me to design a book that had been written and illustrated by Christopher Leonard, the pianist at the Inn. When I first met them, I immediately felt an easy rapport, and knew I could create a product they would be delighted with and that my skill in publishing was what they needed to guide them through the process. The finished product more than met their expectations.
